LOCATIONS
Arnaia is the most traditional village of Chalkidiki, having been designated by the Ministry of Culture as a “Historic Site”. It is built amphitheatrically, at the foot of Holomont, at an altitude of 600m., in a lush landscape with forests and plenty of running water. Her old name was Larigova or Liarigovi.
Throughout the village you will see a large number of old traditional houses of significant architectural value, made of stone and wood. They are works of Arvanites and Epirus technicians.
The reference point of the village is the central square, the “bazaar”, with the – age-old plane tree – a trademark of the village, through which drinking water flows. In the stone-built alleys, which start radially from the square, creating smaller squares and neighborhoods, one can admire the rich, traditional stock that this place has.
Visit the colorful and stone-built “Giannoudenas Square”, where the most remarkable samples of Arniotian architecture are gathered and visit the two exceptional museums: the textile museum and the folklore museum, and get lost in the beauty of the past!
In the cobbled streets of the village, where you will walk, you will enjoy another atmosphere, taken from time and seasons. You will see the cruciform with dome Church of Agios Anargyros, the imposing stone building of the primary school and you will taste organic honey, cheese, wines, mudovina, pastries, tulips and yogurt. Arnaia is the main area in organic primary production!
Arnaia is a tourist attraction all year round as it is located among forests and many people choose it to do agritourism, to walk on the paths in the dense mountains and to enjoy nature and the fresh air. In summer it is an ideal destination for an afternoon walk or for a meal in the traditional taverns of the central square. At a distance of 15 km from Arnaia are Stageira, the birthplace of the philosopher Aristotle, where there is the park of Aristotle that is worth seeing for you and your children.
Arnaia is considered a wonderful place for vacation and mountain tourism. And this is not said from narrow localistic perceptions, but based on reality. Because Arnaia is right in huge forests, with all the facilities of accommodation, with fresh air, with coolness, with wonderful cool water, without mosquitoes that fill the beaches in summer, with the possibility of walks in magical countryside and with a quiet and pleasant sleep, provides all the possibilities of vacation and mountain tourism.
It has the privilege to be almost an hour (70 km) away from Thessaloniki, and 30 km from the sea, with a journey of less than half an hour.
In addition to the benefits it offers in the field of mountain tourism, Arnaia is also an ideal destination for the summer, as it is very close to beautiful beaches of Halkidiki, which offer clear and safe waters, as well as spacious sandy beaches. At a distance of just 35 minutes by car you will find the beach of Ierissos, which is very famous and constitutes one of the all-time classic beaches of Halkidiki. The beach of Ierissos offers an organized part with sunbeds and beach bars for the lovers of comfort, as well as a free part for those who prefer the peace and quiet.
At the same distance, about 35 minutes through the provincial road of Polygyros-Ierissos, you can find Akti Pyrgos of Gomatio, Halkidiki. This is a beach with amazing natural beauty, which does not lack affordable luxury, as those who wish can find beach bars with elegant design and very good service.
Another beach that you can reach in 30 minutes through the provincial road of Thessaloniki-Ierissos is Stratoni. It is a quiet, spacious beach, with soft sand and clear blue waters, with great options for coffee and food.
ACTIVITIES & SIGHTS:
Eastern Chalkidiki and the region of Arnaia is the place that gives you many opportunities for day trips, since the alternation of the place (300 km of coastline between three mountains protected by the European Treaty of Natura 2000) enables the development of natural phenomena and human activities, which are rarely found in a single holiday destination.
– Walks in Arnaia:
. Starting from the main square, whichever road you follow you will need a maximum of 10 to 20 minutes to complete a very interesting walk.
. The Municipality has designed 6 distinct walking routes with the aim of serving the visitors and the easier acquaintance with the architectural wealth of the settlement. All routes start and end radially in the main square, revealing both the near and far corners of the settlement.
. The shortest walking route (10 minutes) is the one marked in red on the map and passes through Gerogianni Square and Kari Pazari. The larger ones, such as the green and the yellow, lead to the northern ends of the historic center, reaching as far as Horostasi and the church of Agios Stefanos.
- Historical Folklore Museum: The Historical and Folklore Museum is located in a stone-built, narrow street near the central square of Arnaia and is part of the historic center of the settlement. It is housed in the mansion of Iatrou, or Giatratiko, one of the most beautiful buildings of the settlement and the oldest in Chalkidiki. It probably dates to the second half of the 18th century, or the beginning of the 19th. The building belonged to Konstantinos Katsangelos and housed the folklore collection, which had been placed by the Cultural and Educational Association of Arnaia. It has been operating as a museum since the summer of 1999 and today belongs to the Municipality of Aristotle.
- Weaving Museum: The best way to get acquainted with the weaving art and the local tradition is to visit the Weaving Museum which is housed in a traditional two-storey building in Arnaia. It was a private residence and is known as the house of Giannoudenas. It dates back to 1870. The building was restored and properly designed by the Municipality to house the Museum of Textiles.
- Church of Agios Stefanos: Three-aisled basilica with a bell tower dating from 1889. It is the only church in Greece that operates for the needs of the faithful while it is built on antiquities of great value – and even visible, since on the floor of the church there are special windows. In the famous bell tower of the church, when they were liberated from the Turkish yoke, the Arnaiotes hung a historical clock that the Turks had transported from the village of Tepalides, when they destroyed Liarigovi in 1821.
- Agia Paraskevi Grove: it is one of the most popular recreation areas and is only 2 km from Arnaia. The walk in the grove of Agia Paraskevi with the oaks, the church of the same name and the refreshments will refresh you and relax you. Schools from all over Chalkidiki and dozens of people touring the Municipality of Aristotle visit it all seasons. Here, on July 26, one of the biggest festivals in the area takes place.
- Profitis Ilias: hill of Profitis Ilias has a beautiful view and has always been a strategic point of control of the area. It is located near Arnaia and is considered the citadel of the ancient Arnes mentioned by Thucydides in the Peloponnesian War. The excavations of 2003 by the 10th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, led by archaeologist I. Papagelos, highlighted the wall, while the ruins of the Acropolis are preserved on the slopes. Ceramics, coins and tombs have been found. The hill got its name from the chapel that exists there.
- Claudia Papagianni Winery
In the wider area of Arnaia:
- Aristotle Park: It is the only theme park in Chalkidiki. It is worth visiting to see the interesting instruments and enjoy the wonderful view to the bay of Ierissos. The grove pre-existed and the magnificent location was chosen in 1956 to house the imposing statue of Aristotle, the work of the sculptor Nicholas, to honor the great philosopher who was born in Ancient Stageira.
- Ancient Stageira: The most important historical site of Chalkidiki, the ancient Stageira, is located on the Liotopi peninsula, next to today’s Olympiada. Browsing is a real pleasure. In fact, if you want to see them all, know that you will need at least 2 to 3 hours and do not miss the coastal path which is wonderful. The city was founded in 665 BC, by Ionian settlers who arrived from the island of Andros, while a little later settlers from Chalkida also settled there.
- Ancient Akanthos: Ancient Akanthos was spread on three hills of Mount Stratonikos in an area of 560 acres, about 600 meters southeast of the settlement of Ierissos. The walled city got its name either from the many thorns of the area, or from the thorny formation of the fortification. No systematic excavation has been carried out. Some of the travelers of the last century mention the existence of an ancient pier in the port of the city. Indeed, the current traces of ancient Akanthou start from the beach of Ierissos, where remnants of the quay of the ancient port are preserved. The most impressive of the ruins are the walls of the citadel, as parts up to 8 meters high are preserved!
- Ancient Sani: According to the few ancient sources, in the wider area of Nea Rhodes, Chalkidiki, there are three important archeological sites, ancient Sani, colony of Andria, the canal opened by Xerxes, in order to avoid the dangerous sea of Mount Athos, his campaign in Greece, and finally the ancient Ouranoupolis (or Ouranopolis), the fortified city founded by Alexander, brother of Cassander, at the end of the 4th century BC.
- Barbara Waterfalls: The harmony of nature includes two incredible waterfalls and is completed with orchards, alders, lindens, beeches, wild hazelnuts that grow all around, while the rocks with bright colors form a kind of gate at the top. Both the location and the sense of calm, serenity and contact with the natural element make you think you have discovered a piece of earthly paradise.
- Mid-Byzantine castle Neposi: Southwest of the settlement Paleochori, at the top of a steep hill in the wider area with the place name Neposi, is Kastelli. The hill is surrounded by the waters of the stream Paleochorinos Lakkos, a tributary of the Havria, the river Ormylia There is only one narrow and inaccessible path that connects the inaccessible hill with the mountain that extends to its east. However, the castle is not visible from a distance, because around it rise larger mountains, the natural terrain is very intense and the vegetation is lush.
- Mount Athos:
The Monastic Community of Mount Athos (Agion Oros) is geographically defined by the boundaries of the Athos peninsula, the easternmost leg of the larger Chalkidiki peninsula, being a self-governing community within the Greek territory.
Mount Athos is a living worshiping and hesychastic community with continuous and uninterrupted presence that spans over a millennium. It consists of twenty sovereign Monasteries, skētes (smaller communities of Christian hermits with a common area of worship), cells and kathismata (units with a small church operated by the monks living under the spiritual and administrative supervision of a monastery) scattered throughout the peninsula. For more than a thousand years successively, the Holy Mountain operates as one of the most important cultural conservatories for both the Orthodox Christian and the Greek civilization. Directly and tangibly associated with the Byzantine world in all of its religious and cultural manifestations, the twelve century years old monastic community constitutes a living record of human activities, preserving an enormous wealth of historic, artistic and cultural elements that includes manuscripts, incunabula and post-incunabula.
The Holy Mountain is a monumental complex of an outstanding universal value, listed in the Unesco World Heritage List (WHL 454) since:
- a) It constitutes a unique artistic creation that combines the physical environment of the location with the expanded forms of architectural creation.
- b) Being an Orthodox spiritual center since the 10th century, the Holy Mountain still retains its prominent role within the Orthodox world by its presence and its spiritual impact in the Balkan peninsula and Russia, as well as in the United States of America, England, Finland and Africa.
c) The structured human habitation, from the 10thcentury onwards, has fashioned establishments intended for both communal and liturgical activities, such as the Catholicon (the central Church of the monastery), the refectory, the monks’ cells, hospital, libraries, chapels etc. There are also defensive structures, such as fortified towers and harbors, while the skētes, the cells and the kathismata have become a model for Orthodox monastic institutions.
d) The Fathers at the Holy Mountain have developed and preserved a traditional mode of living and a unique management practice, where sustainability finds its true meaning in our post-modern society. Karies is the capital of Mount Athos. It is a small village that has some houses, shops and few temples. Here is situated the building of Holy Community, where the representatives of the twenty Monasteries In front of this building stands the temple of Protaton, the cathedral of Karies. There is kept the miraculous icon AXION ESTI. Opposite the Protato, lies an ancient tower. Inside the tower is the library where is kept the first document of Mount Athos, written on goat skin and called “Tragos”.

VELANIDIA – MONEMVASIA/ DESCRIPTION OF THE LOCATION
Velanidia is a settlement located at the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese, near Cape Malea in Laconia, opposite the famous “Camel” the well-known tip of the foot in the Peloponnese. It is a beautiful village, with intense island aura. Perhaps not by chance, since its foundation was made by Spetses refugees from Orlofika. According to one version and according to the archaeologist Haslak, the ancient city of Sidi was located there. Velanidia stare the Myrtoan Sea and is The Edge of Greece, which was worshiped and was sung from ancient times until today like no other sea trail.

I forgot to tell you that cars are not allowed in the village. There are parking spaces peripherally to protect parents and children from cars, noise and traffic. It is charming to live somewhere in the past with the rules and way of life of the locals. Who does not want to be part of the history?

EMPORIO SANTORINI/ DESCRIPTION OF THE LOCATION
Emporio is the largest settlement in the southern part of the island of Santorini and its location has been important since ancient times. Its name betrays that it was the commercial center of the island (“emporio” means commerce). The most beautiful and best preserved castle of Santorini is located in Emporio, with houses built one next to the other, in such a way that their walls simultaneously create the wall of the castle. The castle had only one entrance, the Door, as the locals call it, and all the windows and doors of the houses were at the inner part of the castle. The interior of this fortified settlement is full of curves. Benches, steps, walls… all have a curved finish. There are small, narrow streets, small doors, many of which bear carvings, little steps, small tunnel passages, and small courtyards, all in harmony with one another. Inside the castle there is the church of Palia Panagia (or Panagia Mesani) with the impressive steeple, the old wood-carved iconostasis with representations from the Old and New Testament and the pebble floor. Photography lovers will spend many hours there, capturing the simple lines in the architecture.

IMPORTANT PLACES / SIGHTS / MONUMENTS
Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni are small volcanic islands in the center of the caldera of Santorini, also known as the “volcano”, which is one of the most special places you can visit in Santorini. The volcanic island of Nea Kameni began to be created around 1570 and today extends to 340 hectares with its highest point today at 127 meters above sea level. Visitors can have a tour on it, or they can visit it around by making an excursion with a boat.
One of the characteristic points of the village of Emporio is also the Tower of Goulas. It is a square tower in the northern part of the village, which was built during the period of Venetian domination, probably around the 15th century.
Also, opposite the tower of Goulas there is the hill of Gavrilos or, mountain Platanimos, in which there are eight traditional windmills of the 19th century and Byzantine ruins. Windmills have been declared historic and listed buildings, they were made of volcanic stones, water, soil and lime and their height reached about six meters.
One of the most special places still worth visiting is the Venetian Castle, “Skaros” in Imerovigli. Skaros was the oldest and perhaps the most important of the five fortified settlements of Santorini. If you are in the area, do not forget to visit the small chapel located in front of Skaros, visible from the boat at the entrance to the caldera. Also another place that will impress you with a visit is the castle in Oia. Its old name was Kastelli of Agios Nikolaos. From the Kastelli of Agios Nikolaos in Oia today a part of the goula (tower) is preserved. It took its name from a cave church dedicated to Agios Nikolaos and was built around 1450.
One of the museums that are Sights of Santorini is the Volcan Wines Museum in Vothonas, which is located at a depth of 6 meters below the earth’s surface. The Museum has a total length of over 300 meters, with corridors and rooms shaped like a labyrinth. Exhibits dating from 1660 to 1970 present the history of wine and the life of the Santorini wine grower in representations with movable and immovable dummies.
An additional place worth visiting in Fira is the Archaeological Museum located in the center of Fira and reveals the long history of the island. In its rooms it hosts collections of sculptures and inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman period, as well as ceramic vases and clay figurines until the Hellenistic period.
Also, if you are a fan of tradition you can visit the Folklore Museum. The folk tradition of Santorini is kept alive in Kontochori of Fira, in a cave Thera house that was built about a century and a half ago. There is also a cave wine cellar with press, linen, barrels, mangle and old utensils while the layers of deposits from volcanic eruptions are visible.

1) Shelter of the Wolf: Have you been to Agrapidies, Florina? Here is the chance! The center was set up there to end the illegal possession of wolves. In a specially fenced section of natural oak forest, covering an area of 70 acres, are hosted all the wolves that managed to be rescued. You may not see them easily, but they will have smelled you from afar! Nymfaio is the ideal destination for nature lovers, hikers, animal lovers, lovers of Greek history and tradition.
2) Nikeios Scholi: The majestic building that housed the Nikeio Scholi (means “School”) in Nymfaio, is a very important attraction both from a historical and architectural point of view, as well as a building that houses the well-known environmental organization “Arcturos”. The Nikeios School was built in 1928 with a donation from the great benefactor tobacconist from the Nymfaio, Ioannis Zan Nikou (1876-1931). Until recently, the prevailing view was that the architectural design was made by Swedes, since Nikou lived there. Recent research, however, showed that it was designed by the famous Greek architect Georgios Pantzaris (1901-1971), who designed dozens of faculties throughout the country. The Nikeios Scholi housed schools until 1980, when it was abandoned. After 1986, restoration efforts began, while “Arcturos” and its headquarters have been operating here since 1993. Today, you can watch in the building an excellent tour by the volunteers of the organization, about the work and the history of “Arcturos”, accompanied by very interesting and explanatory video screenings. A full and didactic experience, for young and old is offered.
3) Brown bear shelter – Arcturos: There you can meet all the bears that are hosted by Arctouros in a specially fenced area of 50 acres, at an altitude of 1,350m. Unforgettable experience! For your safety, the use of mountaineering, hiking or sports shoes is recommended as the tour path is forest. Your children will have the unique experience of seeing bears and other animals in nature.
SPORTS ACTIVITIES – ACTIVITIES FOR FUN
Activities in nature: Nymfaio is suitable for forest hiking, cycling and horse riding! Take canoe rides on the lakes or horseback riding, jeep tour, archery! Also if you are more adventurous you can explore the “Paths of Peace”.
Activities offered all year round individually and in groups: Horse riding, canoeing, hiking and cycling. Get up from the couch and come for a horse ride around the village.
Walks on the lakes: Discover the lakes “Zazari” and “Heimaditida”, which are among the important wetlands of Northern Greece and belong to the Natura 2000 network. Enjoy the unique view of the lakes, do birdwatching, canoeing, horseback riding or whatever you prefer!
FOOD AND BEVERAGE
Food suggestion: In the taverns of the area try “Neveska”, a dish with layers of potatoes, finely chopped pork and melted cheese. You should also definitely try the traditional pies (pie with nettle and lemon pie) prepared by the women of the village. Of course you will visit the nearby lakes and taste the favorite fish of the area, the carp. Then nearby the tavern “Thomas” in Sklithro and the tavern “Kontosoros” in Xino Nero are some of the many that we will be able to point out to you and that we think love to share families with children.
Wine tasting: The wine and tsipouro of the area will accompany you with every meal, whatever you eat. Just ask the tasters to suggest what matches what! If you like the experience of wine tasting then you should know that you will find in the area some of the most famous wineries in Greece. One of them is the Alpha Estate. Also in the area are the wineries Karanika and Vegoriti which are worth visiting. Also, a little further in the area of Naoussa is the museum – winery Boutari.

It is a replica of an old mansion. It is also worth visiting when you are in Nymfaio, the church of Prophet Elias and the ruins of the headquarters of Pavlos Melas during the Macedonian Struggle.
Florina Nymfaio Gold Museum: The museum has incorporated old murals from other mansions of Nymfaio. It also has original furniture and household equipment of a 19th century house. The museum exhibits portraits and photographs of Greeks of Vlach origin, who contributed significantly to the political, economic and social life of the country in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, as well as photographic material from the traditional social life of the inhabitants of Nymfaio. In addition, authentic women’s costumes are on display.

On the one side the Pagasitic Gulf, on the other the Aegean. In the middle a magical mountain to discover: Pelion. Gargling water in the fountains. Sunbeams through the foliage: plane trees, apple trees, chestnut trees, oaks, beeches, gardenias, hydrangeas, camellias … In this fertile soil of Thessaly, nature blooms.
In autumn, the orange and red colors of an unreal palette spread generously in front of you. Paths, old churches, beaches with green waters. From above, the villages of Pelion gaze upon the scenery. A weekend doesn’t feel enough to enjoy it, but it is enough to love it forever. Welcome to Pelion!
The homeland of the Centaurs and the summer residence of the 12 Olympian gods is adorned by a multitude of traditional picturesque villages. One of the most beautiful and famous villages is Tsagarada.
Built amphitheatrically on a verdant slope, it offers a unique view of the Aegean Sea and is surrounded by beautiful beaches, bays and little coves. It has always been the village of artists and sophisticated, while its special hotels, hostels and famous taverns have made Tsagarada one of the most popular villages in the area. Beautiful mansions, traditional neoclassical and stone cobbled streets, flowered courtyards, age-old plane trees and chestnut trees create an ideal setting for relaxation.
The village is sparsely built and gives the impression of many settlements that are connected by cobbled streets and paths. Tsagarada consists of neither one, nor two but four settlements. Specifically, Agia Paraskevi, Agios Stefanos, Agia Kyriaki and Agios Taxiarches. In short, it occupies a green slope from the height of the ring road and a little higher, up to the Aegean, thus constituting the ideal combination of mountain and sea.
Of course, Tsagarada is not a favorite tourist destination just for its natural beauty. The inhabitants of the village over the years endowed it with ornaments such as their own houses, which are traditionally built with Pelion architecture, the churches monuments, built in beautiful squares under age-old plane trees, stone bridges and a well preserved network of paths that give the opportunity of short getaways in the heart of the forest of Pelion.
Between mountain and sea, the village is the ideal base for excursions in the surrounding area and in nearby villages, such as Kissos, Chania, Zagora, Milies and in the summer months Damouchari, Agios Ioannis and Horefto.
Finally, hiking lovers will find the ideal destination in Tsagarada. The most famous route is the one that starts from the district of Agia Paraskevi and through the old path that crosses the forest, with bridges and springs, ends in Damouchari, with the beautiful natural harbor. The cobbled path that leads to the district of Taxiarches, with its traditional houses and fountains, also starts from Agia Paraskevi square. Access to many beaches on foot is easy from the village, although it takes a lot of courage to return from the uphill trails.

The Achillopoulios Commercial School of Tsagarada was built in 1864 and is the legacy of Sophocles (1854–1924) and Evangelos (1833–1899) Achillopoulos. We could say that it was a gift from the brothers to their place of birth.
With the establishment of the School, the Achillopoulos brothers laid the foundations for the promotion of secondary specialized vocational education in Tsagarada and the wider region.
The Achillopoulios School was founded in 1865 and was initially urban, while in 1905 it became commercial, attended by people from all parts of Greece.
In the summer, exhibitions or concerts and film screenings are organized in the open space. The digital folklore museum on the first floor is open all year round, presenting miniature objects, inaugurated in the fall of 2008 and funded by the 3rd CSF.
Old Arched Bridge
The stone single-arched bridge of Tsagarada is located at the beginning of the village (on the borders with the village of Xourihti) and from there begins the gorge of Mylopotamos. It is the oldest and most famous bridge of Pelion, with a characteristic pointed arch. Access to it is very easy. From the main road you will find a sign that says “old bridge”. A downhill path between chestnut trees leads you in a few minutes to an incredible place in the forest with the plane trees. Here, you will find benches to relax and enjoy the tranquility offered by the rustling of leaves and the running water from the gorge. Unfortunately, the intense weather conditions of 2021 destroyed this unique jewel of eastern Pelion.
Waterfalls in Mega Rema
From the central square of the village of Kissos begins the path to the source of Tymbanos where the waterfalls of Kissos are created.
The route is a bit difficult but the scenery will reward you.
The squares of Tsagarada.
- Agia Paraskevi Square and the 1,000+ years old plane tree (Platanos):
The plane tree (platanos) of Tsagarada is one of the oldest trees in Greece and perhaps in Europe. Its age, according to foresters, is estimated to 1000+ years and is located in the central square of Tsagarada, Agia Paraskevi.
- Agioi Taxiarches Square:
4km before Agia Paraskevi square you will find the 2nd largest square, that of Agios Taxiarches and its 4 fountains. The church dates back to 1746 and is one of the oldest churches in Pelion. In the area you will find cafes, restaurants, taverns, gift shops, markets, etc.
- Agios Stefanos Square:
With a very small picturesque church, here you can find what you may be missing, in the shop “Ta kipouremata” and a pizzeria.
- Agia Kyriaki Square:
The southernmost square of the village with its Holy Temple where it operates only during the summer months.

The historic train that used to cover the distance Volos – Milies, ran on the also historic railway whose construction began in 1881, with the first section to Lechonia, to be finally delivered in 1896. The rest of the section to Milies was built later , to be put into operation in 1903.
The train operates from spring to autumn, daily, with 1 daily route on the mountain course. The total travel time is 1 hour and 30 minutes (with 15 minutes parking for unwinding, coffee, tsipouro and soft drinks at the picturesque station of Ano Gatzea).
Access to the train is either from Ano Lechonia railway station or from Milea station.
The mythical path of “moutzouris” (the smudge)
11 o’clock at the station of Ano Lechonia. The train of Pelion whistles giving the signal of an unforgettable route. The climb to the beautiful slopes of Pelion up to Milies begins!
One of the narrowest railway lines in the world (60 cm) houses the 4 wagons of the “moutzouris” (the smudge) as the train of Pelion was once called, to declare the steam and the smoke that it left in its passage. From Ano Lechonia to Milies the route is mountainous, crossing the verdant slopes, with dense vegetation of plane trees and oaks.
In Tsagarada, horses await in a small farm amongst the olive groves, lemon and orange trees, near the sea, just five minutes from the main square of the village. Beautiful, clean and tidy are waiting for the guests.
Their owner is a native of the area and consequently knows all the paths and traditional cobbled streets for both the routes to the sea and those to the mountain.
Riders will be impressed by the beauty of the area, will pass between olive groves, orange groves and rivers, will visit the semi-mountainous areas of Pelion to admire the view to the Aegean Sea, and will run with their horses by the sea, in the beautiful beaches of the area.
Eastern Pelion with its many running waters and lush vegetation is suitable for sports activities. Canyoning, the technique of crossing the gorge is one of the most exciting and fun options you have. You will learn the rappel technique, which is to go down tied with a rope from a height, you will walk in the gorge and dive in the waters and all this in fairytale landscapes.
Finally, if you are a fan of winter sports, a visit to the ski center of Chania is a must. It is probably the only mountain in the world that while going down the ski slope, you can see the sea. This is truly unique.
Beaches:
The most famous beach of Tsagarada is Damouchari, organized and with thick pebbles. Between its two bays are the ruins of the Venetian castle of Damouchari. The beach of Mylopotamos is particularly busy and popular, with the characteristic rock dividing it in two. It is organized, with beach bar and restaurants. The most characteristic point, apart from the crystal clear and turquoise waters, is the depth of the water. Huge and also organized sandy beach, with sunbeds and taverns, is Papa Nero. There are also Plaka, with its beautiful river, but also the sandy beach of Limniona. Of special beauty, due to the wildness of the landscape, is the beach of Fakistra, with steep cliffs and coarse sand with pebbles.
FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT
Pelion cuisine is famous throughout Greece and you will have the opportunity to try it in many of the restaurants in the area. The most famous dish is undoubtedly spentzofai, made from local sausages. The pies are filled with mushrooms, mountain greens and local meat.
Seafood delicacies and fish are usually served in tsipouro and ouzo restaurants, while crayfish spaghetti is very popular, especially in the villages of South Pelion. The famous Pelion pastries, aromatic herbs, honey, jams and tsipouro are some of the local products that are worth taking with you.
IOANNINA
A vibrant city with many aspects and centuries of history, on the shores of an idillyc lake.
Myths surround the city of Ioannina: In the castle, on the Acropolis of Itch Kale, in the Byzantine monasteries and museums. An inseparable part of the life of Ioannina. You will find them in parks, in the petty small shopkeepers of independence, in the groups of lively university students and their hangouts, at the lakeside cafes, bars and restaurants. You’ll catch glimpses of them in the peerless work of Ioannina’s famed silversmiths. They will follow you to the cave of Perama, Dodoni and Zagorochoria. Enjoy your vacation in Ioannina and let yourself be free to feel them. If you do so, this wonderful city of Epirus will amaze you.
Ioannina, the capital of Epirus, is spreads out around the magnificent Lake Pamvotida, between large mountains, an hour away from the beaches of the Ionian. Nature, climate and character of the city are defined by this water ‘lady’. The lake, with its calm waters and the small island, is a natural monument, around which the entire city lives and breathes.
The routes through the city, many attractions and museums, offer the feeling of another era, full of secrets and legends. Marvelous buildings, such as the Hussein Matei House, the Ottoman Mosque of Veli Pasha and the entire historic center of Ioannina are unique attractions.
Even the simplest things in Ioannina are fabulous. Like a walk on the lake of Ioannina. Walk through the city, discover the silversmiths’ shops and the artisans of a tradition known throughout Europe. The local cuisine makes even the most demanding connoisseur smile with satisfaction. The pies and sweets of the region are famous – every bite is a delicious reminder of Ioannina’s geographical position at the crossroads of Europe and the East.
In Ioannina, your eye is filled with images, it travels, it rests in a creative way. The city, the lake, the island, the mountains, all are part of a unique landscape, all make up a visual feast.
Blue of every shade dominates, without meaning that the other colors lag behind significantly. Especially the view of Lake Pamvotida is shocking. Her light blue becomes one with the blue of the sky. It is not clear where the lake ends and the sky begins. Add to this the reflection of the surrounding mountains in the lake and you have a fairy-tale image drawn more from imagination than from reality.
A feast of colors with incredible and unexpected changes also in the mountains of Ioannina: The palette of colors is literally endless, different every season of the year. The “harder” colors of autumn and winter give way to the spring explosion of colors and summer harmony.
Starting from Ioannina, you can combine same-day mountain or sea excursions. To see historical, religious and non-religious monuments, to do sports activities, to see and taste the beauties and flavors of the region, to live and be excited by the experiences you will get. Close to the Thesprotic coast and from there to the coast of Preveza and the Ionian Islands, there is a destination that will be unforgettable for everyone.

It is by far the most beautiful lake in Greece, with its thickly planted banks and impressive mountains reflected in its waters.
Get to know the cultural heritage and tradition on the island of the Byzantines
A few minutes of boat ride on the lake and you reach the Island, which is overflowing with attractions. The mountains hug the lake and the lake hugs the island. The horizon grows, water and sky become one, endless blue. The lake marks the transition to another magical era and fills us with nostalgia.
Prepare to walk, in order to know its precious Byzantine heritage and monasteries, such as those of Agios Nikolaos of Philanthropines (1292), the Dormition of the Virgin and Agios Panteleimon, where Ali Pasha was killed. In the Ali Pasha Museum, in a space designed according to the folk houses of Ioannina, the painting with the handover of his head to the Sultan dominates. In the taverns of the Island you can try trout or eel.
The tour inside brings the visitor into contact with the history of the city from antiquity to the present day, while the visit to the museums and exhibition spaces offers the opportunity to view the wider region of Epirus during medieval and modern times but also an art, religious and secular experience, of the three communities that coexisted in Ioannina.
Citadel of Its Calais
An uphill paved path leads to the Acropolis of Its Kale. Passing the imposing stone entrance, it’s like starting a real journey through time. Historical sources testify that here, during the Byzantine period, the houses of the lords of the city were consecrated, with the Metropolitan Temple of the Taxiarches and the Temple of Pantocrator. During the period of Ali Pasha, a time of great economic power and glory of the city, the Serai of Ali Pasha and many military buildings for his officials were located here.
Byzantine Museum in Its Calais
A two-story “royal pavilion” was built in 1958 by the Greek army on the ruins of Seraglio, which today houses the city’s famous Byzantine Museum. A fascinating tour to the beauties, power and uniqueness of the Byzantine Continent unfolds inside its halls.
Fetihe Mosque
At the highest point of the Acropolis of Itz Kale, the imposing building of the Fetihe Mosque steals the eye. The archaeological dig says that a Byzantine Church of the Taxiarches was built here, from which two marble columns of its iconostasis remain and which were incorporated into the first mosque built in the 15th century.
Today the Mosque hosts an exhibition about the city of Ioannina during the period of the late Turkish occupation as well as about the life and work of Ali Pasha. The space experience of the visitor to Fetiye Mosque is rare.
Just outside the Mosque, the burial monument of Ali Pasha, with its vaulted iron railing, houses the graves of Ali Pasha and one of his wives, recalling the role of this great political man, who sealed the developments in region of Epirus, but also throughout the history of the Greek revolution.
Citadel with the Aslan Mosque
The north-eastern citadel of the Castle is known as the Citadel of Aslan Pasha. On its south side, the Byzantine gate and a circular tower that protected it in the past are preserved. This Acropolis was called Epano Goulas and here was the seat of the Despot of Ioannina, the Byzantine ruler of the city. The Church of Agios Ioannis was demolished and in its place was built the Mosque of Aslan Pasha and its neighboring madrasah, as the seminary was called. Even today, these buildings stand majestically and whisper stories of the past.
Today it houses the Ethnographic Museum of Ioannina. In its beautiful spaces are hosted three rare collections, the Greek, the Jewish and the Turkish, representative of the inhabitants who marked the history of the city.
The cave of Perama
On the northwestern edge of Lake Pamvotida, 5 km from Ioannina, in the settlement of Perama (Cave 19), rises the limestone hill of Goritsa (summit height 555m). In its prime and beginning about two million years ago, a polydaida cave was formed through complex natural processes. With 19 different types of stalactites, you will be impressed by the great hall of the “mythical palaces”, the “Statue of Liberty” stalagmite, the “Santa Claus” and the “new state” with its wonderful lakes. It is the first cave arranged for tourism in Greece.
The guided tour is 1,100 m long. The temperature inside the cave is constant (18 degrees Celsius). At the entrance of the settlement, there is a Visitor Information Center.
The area around the cave is ideal for gazing at the lake and feeling the magic of nature. The Perama train connects Ioannina with the picturesque settlement and is a nostalgic choice.
Athanasios Vrellis Wax Museum
Famous in Greece is the Museum of Greek History-Wax Effigies of Pavlos Vrellis, housed in an impressive building in Bizani.
Modern architectural landmarks
The Palace of Justice, the Archaeological Museum (designed by noted Greek architect Aris Konstantinidis) in Litharitsia park, the Military Headquarters of 1879, the Town Hall of 1938, the National Bank of Greece – all are key monuments of latter-day Ioannina. Behind the Military Headquarters is the Cultural Centre Square, where the Veli Mosque stands.
Jewish Synagogue
The Jewish Synagogue of Ioannina, one of the largest synagogues in the country, can accommodate almost 400 believers. Its enclosed courtyard has a well and a fountain, while behind its arched gate are the inscriptions on which 1,750 names are engraved. Names of people, members of the thriving Jewish community of Ioannina, who were transported in the Spring of 1944 to Nazi concentration camps, where they met a tragic death, in one of the most heinous crimes of humanity. Today the community is small and the synagogue usually operates once a year.
ACTIVITIES
Ioannina Walks: The historic center of Ioannina
A walk in the historic center, which extends in the “front” of the city to the lake, is worth only if you desire to wander and get lost. A good starting point for the walk is the Clock Square (1905), opposite the Town Hall. Go down the main road, where you will find jewelry and shops with folk art and souvenirs, and let your instinct guide you. Right and left of the main street, every little street and every alley is a surprise .A small labyrinth of listed buildings, old shopping arcades, inns and old folk houses and small pedestrian streets. Bars and cafes are waiting for you to take a rest tasting the traditional tsipouro with exquisite local dishes, before continuing your walk in Ioannina of the past centuries.
A lakeside walk with company
Εarly morning, a curtain of mist invariably hangs over the lake. When it lifts, the figures of cyclists, fishermen and strollers emerge on the lakeshore path, like paintings amidst the scattered sculptures by Epirot artists – an open-air gallery. You’ll walk in the shadow cast by the Kastro’s two mosques – Aslan and Fetihe – taking in the view of the Island in the distance and beyond it the often snow-capped peaks of Mt Peristeri and Tzoumerka. The loveliest lakeside walk ends at the Naftakia district, the old Fishing Wharf and Tambakika.
Its Kale, the Castle’s inner citadel in Ioannina
Just sitting in a cafe, encircled by the impressive buildings and walls of Its Kale with the lake beyond them, you’ll feel transported to another era. Then go explore the citadel in depth, here are the Fetihe Mosque (which Ali Pasha built for his seraglio’s worship), the tomb (where his headless body was interred), the exceptional Byzantine Museum, the resplendent Treasury, the Arcades and Bohemond’s Tower.
Back to modern Ioannina
If you feel like buying a few things, or just window shopping, busy Michail Angelou Street is where to go for expensive brands and stylish cafes, while boutiques are clustered on 28 Oktovriou Street. Anexartisias (or Independence) Street is the old High Street that took on its current form after a big fire in 1869. It still has dozens of quaint little shops clustered there and the workshops, ironmongers and the old arcades also worth a look. Some, like the Louli arcade, have been restored.
Ioannina Walks: Epirus Highlands
There are a few options to escape from Ioannina. One of the most popular destinations is Zagori. Dozens of traditional, stone villages that maintain their cultural identity. They are divided by rivers, stone bridges, geological shapes, the Vikos Gorge. Hiking in the innumerable paths of Zagoria, climbing on Smolikas and Drakolimni but also activities such as parapente, and excursions for wild mushrooms. Of course rafting on rivers not only in Zagoria but also north of Konitsa and Tzoumerka. Tzoumerka mountains that with their wild beauty earn the admiration of more and more visitors. Metsovo is a special destination. A traditional village with many interesting museums, ski resort in the limits of the national park of Pindos with the beautiful lake in the park of Valia Calda.
FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT
“Like the Pasha at Ioannina”
The expression to “live like the Pasha at Ioannina” means that a person is enjoying the absolute best that life has to offer. It is not enough to have the title of ruler; he also has to live in Ioannina. It is the distillation, in colloquial terms, of the idea that Ioannina was always a wealthy and aristocratic city.
The gastronomic pleasures of Ioannina will satisfy the most demanding. The mountains of Epirus provide a wide range of spices and herbs which are freely used to complement the finest basic ingredients. Fish, of course, from the lake, such as eels and trout, are cooked in sophisticated ways, and together with frog’s legs, a special delicacy, are significant of Ioannina cuisine. The traditional Ioannina desserts are famous throughout Greece. The famous ‘sker bourek’, or ‘sugar pie’, the delicious baklava and the other syrup pastries are few of the flavours that certainly captivate visitors.
One item made only in Ioannina and nowhere else, is an alcohol free liqueur. This completely unique liqueur is based on a mixture of organic vinegar, nectar, fruit syrups, and herbs. It is usually drunk with crushed ice, and you will soon discover, if you try it, that a drink does not have to contain alcohol to be intoxicating. The traditional coffee shops in the town also serve what they call “sherbetia”, or sherbet, which is a kind of sweet wine flavoured with fruit and flowers.
The picturesque village in Arcadia
The Peloponnese is always the first choices of those who want to escape from everyday routine and make a multi-day or short-day escape. Arcadia is a good reason to think about your next autumn or winter excursion. This time we will recommend one of the jewels of the area. A jewel village that looks like it was taken from the pages of a fairy tale. The picturesque alleys, the architecture and nature at its best. We are talking about famous Dimitsana. A village that you will definitely return to a second time as one visit isn’t enough!
At an altitude of 946 meters, with a wonderful view of the plain Megalopolis and Taygetus, it flourished since Homeric times. Its name was Teuthis, but today we all know this picturesque, beautiful place with its much later name and, above all, for the great role it played in the Greek liberation struggle against the Ottoman Empire.
Dimitsana is the proud capital village of Arcadia which has been officially declared a Traditional Settlement since 1978, overflowing with people from the first autumn days until the last moments of spring. However, despite the tourist traffic, it has managed to keep its traditional character intact and offer visitors a unique experience of peace in a beautiful natural environment. An emblematic point of the village are the two-story stone mansions, among which you will see the house of Patriarch Gregory V and Metropolitan Germanos of Old Patras.
The role of the village in the revolution of 1821 was extremely decisive already in the early years of the 19th century when the Friendly Society managed to create a very successful channel of communication between the resistance core of Tripolitsa and the wider area of Gortynia. The place that was one of the many sparks that eventually composed the “fire” behind the great outbreak of the Greek Revolution today is a quiet settlement with the unique quality of relaxing and charming those who visit it.

SIGHTSEEING
Ascent to the Castle
Going around the picturesque settlement of Dimitsana, take uphill road to the area called “Castle” which essentially constitutes the Acropolis of ancient Teuthis. You will meet her at the highest peak of the village, at the point where the view is unlimited and truly magnificent. Today there are no more than some ruins of the old wall that testify to the existence of a large fortification at the site, but the route is worth it as you will have the opportunity to discover the entire village through a pleasant walk from the main street of Lampardopoulou with its dozens of shops and coffee to the beautiful mansions of mountainous Arcadia, old churches with imposing bell towers and green nature of Dimitsana.
Dimitsana School Library
If the history of the village is something that attracts you a lot, then you must definitely make a stop at the “Dimitsana School Library”, where more than 35,000 books are housed (ecclesiastical volumes, writings and some rare publications). Its operation goes back to 1764, when the priestly school, known as the “School of Greek Letters”, was founded in Dimitsana, which it belonged. Graduates of the school were, among others, Gregory V and Palaion Patron Germanos. Before 1821, the library numbered over 5,000 volumes, but, during the struggle, the paper from the books was used to produce cartridges. In the years that followed, its collection was enriched again and today you will see rare volumes, folklore objects, and even the saddle of Papaflessa’s horse. There you will also see the urn with the bones of Palaion Patron Germanos.
Ecclesiastical Museum
The restored house of Gregory V in Dimitsana (near the square) houses the Ecclesiastical Museum of Dimitsana. It contains old sacred vessels, images, sacred vestments, etc. It was created in 1992 and is the realization of an idea of Metropolitan Gortynos & Megalopolis Mr. Theophilos. The benefactor Panagiotis Angelopoulos (1909-2001) and his brother Dimitrios (1907-1986) from the village of Vlahorrafti made a decisive contribution to its creation. It is a two-storey detached house with a basement, which maintains its original traditional architecture. In the spaces of the two floors, which communicate with each other by an internal stone staircase, special showcases containing the exhibits have been added, while its basement, which was the cellar of the house, has been transformed into a small temple in honor of Saint Gregory V.
Holy Sunday Clock
As you walk through its narrow streets, take a look at the famous clock next to the church of “Agia Kyriaki”. The stone bell tower was crafted by marble sculptors from Tinos. It is a gift from the Dimitsanites of New York, from which it was sent around 1900! The bell of the clock weighs 700 kg and arrived in Dimitsana 10 years later, again from America.
Historic monasteries
Three alternative routes are either the one to the Holy Philosopher’s Monastery built in 963, or the path to the Holy Forerunner Monastery built on a rock in such a way that it looks as if it has sprung from the rock. As these are two demanding routes make sure you have everything necessary with you: water, food and the right shoes will be more than useful. In the “Gorge of Lousios” and in an impressive landscape, 3 km from Dimitsana (68 km from Tripoli) is the “Monastery of Eimyalon”. It is built at the root of a large rock, almost meteoric, in the hollow of the ravine of the Isvora stream. It is dedicated to the birth of the Virgin.
Historic faucets
Entering Dimitsana you will see some of the oldest taps of the settlement, which according to the studies must have faced significant water supply problems in the past. The oldest is the famous “Katovrysi”, from which it seems that the inhabitants of Ancient Teuthida used to get water. Even more emblematic, due to its position at the entrance of the village, is the Mustafa fountain, as well as the complex of the Trikamaros Gefyrio and the Kouri fountain opposite the village gas station. The Outdoor Museum of Hydrokinesis
Discovering the area around the settlement walk to the “Open Air Museum of Hydrokinesis”, a distance of about 2 kilometers in a wonderful natural landscape. This is a wonderful example of how the older generations used the momentum of water for daily needs and tasks, such as the production of flour and gunpowder or the processing of hides.
ACTIVITIES
Excursion to the gorge of Lousios
Hiking enthusiasts have yet another good reason to take refuge in Dimitsana. From here start well-marked trails that lead up to the “Lousios River Gorge”, an exciting field of exploration through rugged woodlands and landscapes of breathtaking beauty.
If you are familiar with sports such as rafting, canoe kayaking, climbing or mountain biking (or just want to try your hand) you are again in the ideal spot as the river and the routes around it are suitable for these activities.
Don’t miss out
The view from the hill of Agia Paraskevi, just above Dimitsana. A passable dirt road will lead you to the hill from where the view of the village and the surrounding mountainsides is magnificent, especially at sunset.
Excursions to the three nearby villages
Zatouna
Only 4 km separate Zatuna from Dimitsana, but the scenery is completely different, since it is a quiet village with only one guest house and one or two taverns. On the way from Dimitsana, stop at the small church just before the entrance to Zatuna. It is one of the best spots for a view of the Lousios Gorge. A little further down you will find “Tsagari” square, where the stone-built elementary school of 1919 is located.
Today it houses the “Mikis Theodorakis International Center”, in honor of the composer who lived in exile in the village during the dictatorship. Opposite you will admire the wonderful architecture in the church of “Panagia Elovitissa”, built in 1853. You will find excellent finger food, well-cooked meats and good prices at the “Ou Blexis” tavern (tel. 6973-306226 for reservations). Try the lamb with ouzo, thyme and pelle, the wild boar with orange sauce and the local specialty “plexouda”, two pieces of pancetta braided together. The grilled fennel pie is also delicious, as well as the encapsulated noodles with grated cheese and scrambled eggs.
Zigovisti
One of the most mountainous settlements of the Peloponnese, “Zygovisti”, is located 5 km from Dimitsana, on the road to Stemnitsa. It has been characterized as a traditional settlement, while its history is also important, mainly during the period of the struggle of 1821. Entering the village, you will see the massive marble monument with the names of 200 men who fought alongside “Theodoros Kolokotronis”. In the square with the big plane trees you will stay for coffee, breakfast and food at the “Zygovistino Steki”. Try country rooster, wild boar, eggs with syglino and delicious meatballs. Go up to the highest point of the village and where the asphalt ends turn left. The passable dirt road will lead you to a dense fir forest after 5 minutes, passing the small church of “Agios Georgios”.
Stemnitsa
Stemnitsa (11 km from Dimitsana) is one of the most beautiful villages in the area, with its high-ceilinged stone houses, narrow alleys and its central square, which gathers all the traffic. Note that parking will be difficult and it is advisable to park in the parking areas at the entrance of the village. Stemnitsa was a silversmithing and metallurgical center with famous craftsmen who traveled all over Greece and this tradition continues with the public school of silversmithing, which is housed in an impressive building from 1926. In the square, stay for a coffee and dessert in the historic cafe “Gerousia”, which operates non-stop since 1870. Right next door, the Stemnitsa tavern is famous for its juicy and well-cooked ribs, which are indeed Turkish delight. Beware of peak times, you may have to wait to be seated and served.

Hidden among the lion trees, on a fertile plateau of the mountain of the Centaurs, 40 kilometers southeast of Volos and at an altitude of 250m above sea level (196m is the central square).
Regarding origin of its name, there are two options, the first support that the name comes from the words “arga+elauno” since, according to tradition, Jason’s Argo passed through here during the journey to Colchis. On the other hand, the second option says that the name comes from the paraphrase of the word “rast”, which means forgiveness. Regarding its foundation, the first written mention of the village is from the year 1653, while nomadic herders were the ones who founded the village, according to tradition, during the period of the Turkish occupation. In the earlier years, the village experienced periods of great prosperity in areas such as trade, economy, handicrafts and letters.
During the period of the Turkish occupation, Argalasti was the capital of the “Vakoufis”. It developed economically and the area of Pelion was named after it. It belonged to the “Dimitriados Metropolis”. In 1821 he was burned by the Turks because he didn’t “prostrate”. In the region there are ruins of ancient settlements. Argalasti, as a large village, has a high school, a post office, a health center and a police station. According to the 2011 census, its population is 1,321 inhabitants. According to the last administrative division, it is the seat of the Municipality of South Pelion.

SIGHTSEEING
The church of “Saints Peter and Paul”, with its impressive neoclassical bell tower in the village square
A visit to Argalasti inevitably begins with the impressive Church of “Holy Apostles”, the religious center of the region, built in 1886 and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, a faithful copy of that of “aint Fotini” in Smyrna. Its tall bell tower, added in 1913, is in itself landmark of South Pelion. This distinctive marble structure is 25 meters high, features a Swiss clock and two Russian bells and is visible from all roads leading into the village. It is particularly impressive at night with the lighting that highlights it as a symbol of the area.
Central village square and marble circle with the Centaur
Two steps from church, the central square of village provides a shady shelter for summer visitors, who under the century-old plane trees enjoy their coffee or traditional dishes in one of the square’s taverns. If you cross them more and more you will discover something, such as the “house of Dimadis”, a member of the Philiki Company, the “Hajinikos mansion” – a building of 1880, with strong signs of the wear and tear of time.
Look for the Centaur carved into a marble circle in the center of the square’s cobblestone floor, then follow some of the stone paths that lead to the central neighborhoods of the village. You will be surprised by the number of well-kept, traditional houses, the flowery courtyards, the lush, shady gardens and the beautiful view towards Pagasitikos. The architectural style is a mixture of typical, village houses with red tiled roofs, some neoclassical buildings and the unique, characteristic Pelioreite style with stone roofs, while all these seemingly disparate elements contribute to the charming atmosphere that characterizes Argalasti.
Old Girls’ School
Do not miss to visit the building of the Girls’ School or “Greek School”, which the locals are very proud. The building was donated by Theodoros D. Giorgatzis, while at the beginning of the 20th century its director was the famous Greek poet and philologist Kostas Varnalis. It is located near the central square of the village, it was built at the end of the 19th century and was abandoned after the Second World War. In 2002, the beautiful stone-built building was renovated and highlighted. Today it has been transformed into a multipurpose and event center.
Arched Bridges and fountains
The incomparable architecture of the Epirotian craftsmen and the stone working technique are imprinted on the stone arched bridges of Pelion.
It is impressive how each bridge fits into the natural environment and is an integral part of it.
See the bridges in Katsilochori (located inside Argalasti, at the entrance of the village), Rema Rodias (you will find it on the Argalasti – Lefokastro route), Lefokastro (located inside the Lefokastro settlement), Karydi (the bridge is on the Argalasti route – Xinovrysi) and in Amourtsia (the bridge is on the route Argalasti – Kalamos).
The marble and stone fountains (some with inscriptions of historical importance) Faucets are found in large numbers both in settlements and in rural areas. It is a necessary element in the squares, in the forecourts of the churches, in the network of paths but also in the whole cobbled network of the settlements. The simple ones are leaning against a wall and have a single or double “handful” from which the water runs. From both sides of the recesses there are other smaller ones that serve to place small objects.
On the floor there is always the “gouva”, which is carved in stone or brick and is used for watering the animals. it has stone pillars or wooden posts that support the roof which is always covered with slate roof tiles.

The monasteries
Take a walk at monastery of “Agios Nikolaos” and enjoy the magnificent view towards Pagasitikos. Built in 1732, it is walled and has unique post-Byzantine frescoes. It is located in the green location of Pau and more specifically in the location of Kefalari, just 2 km from Argalasti and in an area full of olive trees, tall trees and running water.
ACTIVITIES
Visit to the wineries of the area
If you are a wine lover or would like to get to know more about the region, then a visit to the wineries of Argalasti is definitely a special experience. Coming from Volos, the scenery on your left side as you enter the village, reminds you Tuscany. Vineyards on a low slope, tall cypress trees and a beautiful, stone building with two wings between them, indicate the location of the Milea winery. It belongs to the Karipidis family, one of the best known winemakers in the Thessaly region for their organic wines.
In the Argalasti vineyard, at an altitude of 700 meters, the vines spread over an area in front of the winery benefit from the sea breeze that keeps them cool in the summer, while being protected by the slope during the winter. The result, which you can taste on a scheduled tour, are quality wines, suitable for aging, while the beautiful courtyard, with its colorful flowers and fragrant lavender, is just what you need for a little break with a glass of wine in hand. Another notable winery in the area worth visiting is the Patistis Winery, at the exit of the village, on a short detour from the road that leads to the Aegean beaches. The second generation of the Patistis family who have undertaken the modernization and upgrading of the winery will pass on their enthusiasm to you as they take you on a tour of the vineyard, showing you where each variety is grown, talking about their wines and filling the glasses with each one.
The setting is spectacular, with 60 acres of vines, where 6 varieties are grown around a beautiful two-story building, and a breathtaking view of Argalasti and the deep blue waters of Pagasitikos in the distance. It’s a sight you can’t get enough of, especially as you walk among the vines, nibbling on the sweet, ripe grapes. Wine tasting takes place in the semi-basement of the winery, a warm and inviting room dominated by wood, with small barrels turned into stools and objects from a bygone era – a sewing machine, a gramophone – setting a nostalgic tone.
Exploration of the South Aegean
A refreshing dip in the endless blue that surrounds South Pelion. Which means it’s time to decide between Aegean and Pagasitikos. The beaches of the southeast Aegean are known for their crystal clear, cool waters and pebbly shores. All of them have a relatively wild, authentic beauty to show, while some are quite isolated. Others, while gathering people, are certainly less noisy and crowded than those of the northern Aegean.
The “Potistikas” – or “Xinovrysi” as it is called by the nearby settlement – “Paltsi” and “Melani” are all located at a distance of 15 km from Argalasti and each is more impressive than the other. As you descend the verdant mountainside towards the sea, the panoramic view is breathtaking. So are the above beaches as you approach and look down on them.
Melani with the deep blue color of the sea is the most deserted, as it has no infrastructure at all. The tall, vertical cliffs that rise out of the water set the scene for a dramatic tone, while the natural clay source that exists at the edge of the beach is why you’ll see many of the bathers covered in mud. Is a beach ideal for peace and isolation, while it is particularly preferred by lovers of free camping who in the evenings set up tents next to the rocks that surround it.
Paltsi with its lovely coast of yellow, green and white fine pebbles is enchanting when the weather is calm. Then the sea is calm and the scenery exudes tranquility, and there is nothing more refreshing than diving into the clear waters and then lying on the cool beach. Here the infrastructure is fortunately scarce – yet sufficient for the basics – leaving the natural beauty of the landscape untouched. You will find only one restaurant and few rental accommodations, all with a great view of the beach. In the afternoon, the color of the impressive rocks that line the beach turns orange as the setting sun reflects on them and the whole scene becomes enchanting.
And finally, the star beach of South Pelion, “Potistika”, is definitely the busiest of all. Just 3 km from the settlement of “Xynovrysi”, following the winding road that passes through the dense vegetation and the shade of all kinds of fruit trees, you reach this wide beach, with golden, thick sand, turquoise, crystal clear waters and the high, impressive rock that almost divides it into two parts. He and many smaller rocks scattered in the water, make up an aquatic playground for those who dare to climb and dive from above into the deep blue waters.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for a less adventurous beach, or especially when the August warm weather starts, when the above seas raise a lot of waves and become even dangerous, then the protected coves of Pagasitikos are the ideal choice. “Pau” and “Kalamos” are the closest beaches to Argalasti, while a few kilometers further south you will find “Milina” and “Chorto”. All these areas have sheltered beaches, with warm and shallow waters and are a good choice for families with small children.
Kalamos stands out for its picturesqueness and the sense of peace and tranquility it exudes. And here, the view as it emerges between the olive trees, descending towards the settlement, is enchanting. A small, white church hidden among cypresses and marigolds marks the entrance to Kalamos, where behind its narrow beach you will find a traditional restaurant and several beautiful houses. The place exudes an old-fashioned charm, a sense of summer carelessness from another era, where bathers retire at noon for a siesta and return in the afternoon for another refreshing dip. The wonderful, golden sunset enjoyed on the coast is the icing on the cake.
Hiking
It is a favorite destination for hikers, since they can follow the stone cobblestones and reach either the sea or more mountainous parts.
Tasting and tasting of traditional cuisine
Before leaving the village to explore the countryside, it is worth doing some small shopping and getting some fresh fruit from the local producers – after all, the area is known for its fertile soils and important agricultural production. You will find delicious olives, figs, grapes and peaches, while at the traditional grocery store in the center of the square you will buy honey from the area, jams and spoon sweets from Pelion fruits and the very good “Plastiga” beer from Volio.

Take a walk around the square to see the monuments, the statues of Antonis Katsantonis and Markos Botsaris (heroes of the 1821 Greek Revolution), the church of Agia Triada and the plane trees and icy mountain-water spring. The miracle-working Monastery of Proussos
Every year, thousands of believers make their way to this historic monastery in one of the most important pilgrimages in Greece. Once there, they kiss the icon of the Virgin Mary (Panagias tis Prousiotissas), regarded as a miracle-worker. The icon is said to have been brought here from Proussa (Bursa) in Asia Minor, to protect it from the Iconoclastic purge taking place at that time. It is where the chapel was built, which now houses the miraculous icon. It has been said that the silver and gold cover was a donation from Georgios Karaiskakis (a War of Independence hero). Situated 300m from the monastery, on a rocky hill, is the elegant Clock Tower. Observe on the hillside “Typoma”, a hole in the mountain mass, which is said to have been opened by the Virgin Mary, on her way to the Monastery of Prousos.
In the museum of the monastery you will admire not only sacred relics, but also the sword, fez and pistol of Karaiskakis. The four-storey tower on the opposite hill, will certainly catch your eye. Along with it, stands the building of the School of Greek Culture where Cosmas of Aetolia taught. The access to the lighthouse is difficult, (it is approached from the path that starts from the church of Agioi Asomatos which is built with the stones of the sanctuary of Tainarios Poseidon), but when you reach it the landscape of wild beauty that you face compensates you more than enough.
Porto Cayo was one of the most important ports of Mani and was a natural port through which passed, among others, Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, Franks and the pirate fleet of Lambros Katsonis.
